Literally, "glasses girl"—one of the classic "sweet girl" stereotypes in anime.

When seen through the lens of how attractive others find her, she is cute without going overboard and seems more approachable than a more conventionally beautiful girl. The meganekko is usually pleasant and clever, and something about the fact that she needs glasses seems to imply an endearing vulnerability that makes her far more accessible to the average guy. After the Yamato Nadeshiko, she is presented as the second-best girl that a boy can bring home to meet his parents and probably the more realistic of the two. Naturally, as with any stereotype, the meganekko can be inverted or subverted, but the vast majority in anime are sweet, smart and relatively independent. Occasionally she is an unpopular character within the story, but not with the fans.

The glasses are the important part, though. Whether she's Blind Without 'Em or not, they are presented as key to her appeal. This is one girl who does not need a "Beautiful All Along" transformation; in fact, taking her glasses away is an almost surefire way to reduce her attractiveness! Keep in mind that not all Meganekko/Megane's are always nerds or geeks of some sort.

Sometimes the presence or absence of glasses shows a change in personality, while other times they are a way to give a character a more realistic costume prop.

In Western countries this type of character is rarely popular; when she appears, she is often commanded that The Glasses Gotta Go!, although the Shrinking Violet or cute nerd sometimes invoke this trope.

Glasses on a Hot Librarian or Sexy Secretary are a completely different thing. The Seemingly-Wholesome '50s Girl may use glasses to pretend to be this trope.

Boys with glasses are called megane, and can occasionally fit into this type (especially in the Yaoi Genre). (Note that boys cannot properly be called "meganekko"; the term refers specifically to girls.) Other possible male types include Stoic Spectacles, Bespectacled Bastard Boyfriend and Four Eyes, Zero Soul.

When glasses result in sex appeal rather than Moe, they have got Sexy Spectacles.

A sub-trope of Charm Point; also compare Speech-Impeded Love Interest, when a speech defect plays the same role in giving an endearing vulnerability to the character.

Pronounced "may-gah-nay-koh", not "MEGA-neko". That'd be a really big cat. Also not to be confused with MegaTokyo, or Meganeko.

• A State Farm ad shows guys wishing up things they want. One wish is for a girl that lives in their apartment building. Instead of being a token hot blond, she's actually more cute than sexy, and wears (*gasp*) glasses.
• The OS-tan version of Windows 2000 has this look, which overlaps with both Hot Librarian and Sexy Secretary, given she's a personification of an operating system.

    Anime and Manga

• An interesting example: Mai Kadowaki is an actress who needs to wear glasses in real life, so she tends to play various characters in anime who fit in this trope.
• .hack//Legend of the Twilight: The fanservice-clothed, voluptuous wolfgirl Ouka is a meganekko in the real world, with associated personality traits.
• 11eyes: Yukiko Hirohara. Turns out she wears the glasses to keep her cold-blooded other side in check.
• In Ah... and Mm... Are All She Says, Toda's debut one-shot Ferris Wheel Reversal stars a glasses-wearing high-school girl. And despite the manga itself is quite polarizing among readers, even those who don't like it admit her glasses are quite cute.

  Anonymous Imageboard User: Yeah, the chick had nothing going for her except the glasses.

• Ah! My Goddess: Hasegawa Sora is a shy platonic friend of the protagonist.

• Ai Kora: Yukari, who even has a fangirl of her own with a glasses fetish. The mangaka even devoted a whole chapter to this topic: when Yukari feels insecure about her looks, thinking that her glasses make her ugly, the aforementioned fangirl takes her to a cafe full of glasses fetishists, who make her model different outfits and glasses and repeat that the glasses enhance the look. They even teach her 'glasses techniques', like peering over the glasses, etc. Of course, when she meets the protagonist and tries it out, he doesn't notice, because his fetish ain't her glasses.
• Ai Yori Aoshi: Taeko Minazuki is an innocent, adorable and attractive Red-Headed Meganekko. Who also plays the maid and sidekick within the series, she frequently has awkward and clumsy moments that gets her into trouble with Mrs Miyabi a lot plus being Tina's more responsible and modest opposite.
• Akahori Gedou Hour Lovege: Maika. This is even lampshaded by the photographers in the modeling studio where she works.
• Manami Okuda (the chemistry girl) from Assassination Classroom. She's the only girl in her class who wears glasses.
• Attack on Titan: Has the cheerful and outgoing Hange Zoe, who is a veteran member of the Survey Corps.
  • Rico Brzenska also qualifies.
• Azumanga Daioh: Yomi is both an honors student and an Academic Athlete, as her grades are consistently among the highest at the school (usually placing second below Chiyo). She's also the most sensible and levelheaded student in Yukari's class, which is why she's often the series' straight man.
• Bakemonogatari: Hanekawa Tsubasa. Another example of the personality change, as her glasses fall off whenever she transforms into a white-haired psychotic catgirl. Apparently she can only be either a Meganekko or a Neko at any given time.
• Battle Spirits Shonen Toppa Bashin has Fumiko Otonashi, who actually goes by the nickname "Meganeko". Her real name isn't even mentioned until later into the series. She's a polite and sweet, yet practical girl. The twist is that she starts wearing contacts later into the series, because it's easier for her to read the cards when she starts playing Battle Spirits. But her friends continue calling her Meganeko, because it's too weird for them otherwise.

• Barakamon: The otaku and aspiring mangaka Tama. Her little brother is a megane and both of their parents wear glasses as well. There is also Jou Tatenaga, who is a adorkable glasses girl, and a bit of a doormat
• Beyond the Boundary: Mirai Kuriyama. She initially appears clumsy, awkward, and tries not to associate herself with others, but is actually kindhearted and sweet (not to mention a badass). Humorously, her boyfriend has a glasses fetish which Mirai finds "unpleasant".
• Black Butler: Mey-Rin, the maid of the Phantomhive Manor is a clumsy, quirky and apologetic Meganekko who appears every so often in the series mostly as a comedic character. However she is a lot more talented than she seems and is quite the beauty as well
• Black Lagoon: Possible subversion: Greenback Jane wears glasses and is very smart in certain areas. She's also yappy, bitchy and full of herself. She is also the only character to have panty shots. Roberta on the other hand plays with the trope in that she is at her core an Ax-Crazy implacable woman Determinator, but also tries to be Garcia's loving and gentle "Roberta," which she can only be with her glasses.
• Bleach: Lt. Nanao Ise is pictured far right, on the second row of the page image. And, if it weren't for her, the Gotei's 8th division would go down the crapper, because her captain is the Brilliant, but Lazy type. So it's usually up to her to keep their division's affairs in order.
• Blue Seed: Sakura Yamazaki is a subversion, only donning her oversized Nerd Glasses to fight demons.
• Bokura no Hentai: Marika wears glasses for the first several chapters however insists they don't fit her and opts for contacts later.

• Candy Boy: Kanade, the "younger" twin sister, wears glasses. However, in most of her appearances, she wears contact lenses instead.
• Case Closed:
  • Eisuke Hondou is a Rare Male Example, coupled with Cute Clumsy Girl and Dude Looks Like a Lady.
  • Kobayashi-sensei. Without her glasses, it's hard to tell her apart from Miwako Sato.
• A Certain Magical Index/A Certain Scientific Railgun has Tsuzuri, Mī and Hyouka. Subverted with the Dorm Supervisor of Tokiwadai and Therestina.
• Chocotto Sister: Chitose, the landlady, wears thick glasses and is very self-conscious about it. A boy calling her a "four-eyed dog" in high school is a major emotional hurt of hers and Haruma's complimenting her on how she looks wearing them is a large part of why she falls for him.
• Chrono Crusade: Shader, although she's much more of a Genki Girl than the typical stereotype.
• CLANNAD was mostly lacking in Meganekkos, but Sanae delivered in spades with her disguise in After Story. Tomoyo at one point starts wearing glasses as well.
• Code Geass: Nina Einstein was like this for much of the first season. She appears this way for a good portion of season one because she barely says anything. But then she gets weirder, and weirder, and weirder. And then worse. And in the end, she gets better. She also has elements of Beautiful All Along in episode 9 of R2 when she attends the wedding banquet for Tianzi and Prince Odysseus as Schniezel's date, in a pretty gown and without her glasses. Although whether this actually makes her more attractive or not is up to personal taste.
• D.Gray-Man: Rohfa is an exceedingly cute example.
• Subverted by Yanagin in Daily Lives of High School Boys, who is one loud-mouthed hothead. When asked about her deviation from the archetype, she claims the glasses were only for for vision purposes (and threatened to rape her friend that made the question).
• Dance in the Vampire Bund: Has poor, Nanami Shinonome who became a victim of a Vampire plot to destroy humanity, luckily she gets rescued by Mina Tepes.
• Darker Than Black: Kirihara, though she's more "cool" or "noble" than "sweet". Maybe borderline case with The Glasses Gotta Go: these glasses tweak her appearance, but she looks quite well both ways.
• Date A Live: Reine Murasame is a reasonable example, though she ditches the glasses at times. She's still very attractive in her sleep deprived way.
• Den-noh Coil: Everyone, but especially Yasako, since she wears ordinarily shaped glasses with Augmented Reality instead of goggles. Her personality fits as well.

• Doki Doki School Hours: Shizuka "Iinchou" Nagare the Class President.
• Durarara!!: The shy and adorable, Anri Sonohara is a worthy entry. Her quiet and intuitive nature serves as the glue between Kida and Mikado.
• Emma: A Victorian Romance: Emma. Interestingly enough the series is set in age where it was rare for even the middle class to wear glasses, much less a servant girl.
• Fairy Tail:
  • Levy wears glasses whenever she concentrates on her work, she and Laki represent this for the younger guild members.
  • Evergreen is more refined and eccentric then the usual example but qualifies nonetheless.
• Fruits Basket lampshades this when Tohru and Yuki go to Ayame's shop and meet his assistant — a glasses-wearing girl in a maid outfit who proceeds to explain the long tradition of Meganekko to Heroic BSODing Yuki.
• Flunk Punk Rumble (Yankee-kun to Megane-chan in Japan): Adachi Hana, aka Megane-chan, tries to cover her past being a Delinquent by becoming a Meganekko and Class Representative. And it works.
• Satellizer L Bridget from Freezing is a particularly good example, as her moe factor is most obvious when she has them on.
• Fullmetal Alchemist:
  • Sheska/Sczieska even works in a library. She's far more prominent in 2003 anime, where she becomes one of Winry's closest friends.
  • At one point in the story, Riza pops out the lenses from Fury's glasses and parades around in them, as a (somewhat ineffective) disguise. She also wears glasses in several omakes and a video game. The "reason" for all this seems to be she just looks hot in them.
  • Discussed Trope in the movie's extras when the director Mizushima and Rie Kugimiya (Alphonse) talk about glasses for three minutes and invoke the popularity of the meganekko.
• Gonna Be the Twin-Tail!!: Anko Isuka, a.k.a. Dark Grasper, who, like many other things in the series, takes this whole concept very seriously. She joined the bad guys so that its the only attribute left on the universes they go to, due of less and less girls wearing glasses due of various reasons.
• From Mobile Fighter G Gundam we have Bunny Higgins (one of Chibodee's Gals) and Natasha Zabigov (Argo's warden). Bunny's glasses give her a sweet sophistication; in contrast, Natasha's accentuate the sternness of a woman who's all business.
• Kati Mannequin and Linda Vashti from Mobile Suit Gundam 00 both qualify.
  • Tieria Erde, Ian Vashti and Regene Regetta are male examples.
• Mobile Suit Gundam SEED has ORB pilot Juri Wu Nien. A manga spinoff, Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Frame Astrays, introduces Riika Sheder, a Coordinator whose flawed creation forces her to wear glasses.
• Gunslinger Girl: Claes doesn't need to wear glasses, but does so anyway as a memento of her previous handler.
• Haibane Renmei: Hikari. In contrast to Kana and Kuu, both of whom dress rather Bifauxnen, Hikari with her glasses looks the most like a smart young lady.
• Hanaukyō Maid Team. Head maid of the Technology department Ikuyo Suzuki wears glasses. Most of the time she is cute and friendly, but at times she can develop Scary Shiny Glasses and become a Mad Scientist.
• Haruhi Suzumiya:
  • Subverted (and lampshaded) with Yuki Nagato, when she loses her glasses, Kyon comments that he "doesn't really have a glasses fetish" anyway and refuses to explain what the term means when she asks.
  • Haruhi seems to be quite familiar with this trope. One of her more plot-related molestations of Mikuru featured her borrowing Yuki's glasses, perching them on Mikuru's nose, and proclaiming that poor Mikuru is now the perfect moe blob.
• Hellsing of all places plays with this.
  • The Iscariot nun Yumiko is a simple, sweet, shy girl with her glasses on. Take them off and she becomes an impossibly psychotic, enraged killing machine. There are three other Girls With Glasses of note in the series, but while they may be cute none of them (including Integra Hellsing herself) have even a nodding acquaintance with "sweet".
  • Integra embodies this trope when she was a child.
  • Rip Van Winkle was this as a human. She gives an air of it, before being violent, now.
• Hetalia: Axis Powers:
• Hidamari Sketch: Sae, who's generally pleasant, consistently described as "beautiful" in the manga's character profiles, and is called "a walking encyclopedia".
• High School Girls: Subverted, where the sweet-looking glasses girl of the group is the dimmest and most perverted out of all of them.
• Highschool of the Dead doesn't reveal Saya wears glasses until the second chapter, where she finally removes her contact lenses. Though the manga wastes no time establishing her as the smartest student at Fujimi High, by showing her analytical and decision making ability, which is how she and Hirano survived long enough for Takashi and the others to find them.
• Highschool DXD: Panders to the fans of this trope with the petite Sona Sitri and her lovely Queen piece Tsubaki Shinra.
• Hunter × Hunter: Shizuku has the look down. The "sweet" aspect is diminished somewhat by the fact that she's a remorseless murderer.
• Hachibe Eto in Iono-Sama Fanatics as well as Iono's childhood friend and secretary-of-sort Kass Lucense.
• Ikki Tousen has three Meganekkos: Rikuson (Lu Zun), Ryuubi Gentoku (Liu Bei) and Kaku Bunwa (Jie Xu). Kaku is also a subversion, since she's a sensual, ruthless tactician as well as a Manipulative Bitch.
• Junsui Adolescence: Nanao breaks the sweet cute girl bit of this by being a Tsundere.
• Kämpfer: Akane gets the extreme personality makeover when her transformation trades her glasses for guns. She goes from Shrinking Violet Covert Pervert to Remy-lite.
• Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple: Miu Fuurinji subverts this trope by being an inversion of The Glasses Gotta Go. She wears glasses for the stated intention of toning her Buxom Is Better appearance down.
• Kiddy Grade: Mercredi and Vendredi. Strangely, though, Mercredi demonstrates that she actually doesn't need them at all, when she puts them down as Alv and Dvergr invade HQ. Later, she shows up again, but in her real form, Pfeilspitze, with a different costume and no wig nor glasses, showing that she either wears contacts or doesn't need them at all.
• Kill la Kill:
  • Maiko Ogure. Her niceness is later revealed to be an act; she's actually a Laughably Evil Bitch in Sheep's Clothing, and quite the Large Ham.
  • Rei Hououmaru seems to be the only legit example from the series, she obediently follows Ragyo like a secretary and generally keeps a quiet demeanour,which is a rare treat when in comparison to some characters.
• Kimagure Orange Road: Manami Kasuga is one of the earlier embodiments of this trope. A cute, sweet, responsible girl, she keeps the Kasuga household together. Be warned - she can't see anything if she loses her glasses or contacts.
• K-On!: Nodoka is pretty calm and friendly, and like everyone else, mostly gets annoyed with Ritsu. Mio shows she can pull off the look by borrowing(?) her glasses temporarily, leaving her with 3s for eyes in manga (while her coolness remains unchanged during the same scene in anime).
• The Kurosagi Corpse Delivery Service has designer frame-wearing Ao Sasaki, who is even called a meganekko in the notes at the back of the English-language volumes of the manga. Even when she's talking to another character in a spiritual form, she still has her glasses on
• The Law of Ueki: Rinko Jerrad. Mori Ai also has glasses—and her powers are based around them—but she wears them atop her head rather than over her eyes.
• Laid-Back Camp: Oogaki Chiaki and Sakura Kagamihara.
• Loveless has so many meganekko and megane it's believed that the author has a fetish for it. Some female examples are Shinonome-sensei, Kouya, and Nana.
• Lucky Star: Miyuki. Lampshaded when Konata comments that her glasses are part of her Moe appeal. She also blurts that her email address is (translated) IXTRALUVGIRLSWITHGLASSES, while in a crowded bus, earning some odd looks.
• Lyrical Nanoha:
  • Played straight by Nanoha's elder sister Miyuki and the Wrench Wench Shario "Shari" Finieno in Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha StrikerS.
  • Also subverted by Quattro in the third season. She looks and acts the part, but all of that hides a Smug Snake who's nasty to the core.

• Magical Witch Punie-chan: Poor poor Tetsuko, who is also the Straight Man for everyone else's madness.
• Maken-ki!: It's readily apparent from Takaki's red rimmed specs that she's the no-nonsense, intellectual type. And in fact, is both an honors student and the student council president at Tenbi Academy. As such, she's strict and expects the others to perform up to standards, but generally means well.
• Martian Successor Nadesico: Hikaru. One character specifically notes that she's cute with her glasses off, as if she weren't cute enough already.
• Medaka Box- Kikaijima Mogana is one of these when she gets out of her swimsuit. Onigase Harigane is one too.

• Mermaid Melody Pichi Pichi Pitch: Noel has reading glasses, which she appears to need only for effect when she says smart things.
• Midori Days: Seiji's cantankerous delinquent big sister is also a bit of a subversion, although her glasses are better explained by her Office Lady outfit. Played straight by Seiji's first crush Yukino, even if she did grow up to be a Yaoi Fangirl.
• Modern Magic Made Simple: Anehara Misa. She has a nice and playful personality, but lacks common sense.
• Lampshaded in Mononoke Sharing. All the girls are having a selfie competition to see who can get the most likes online. Mizuchi's attempts to up her game in the second round by removing her glasses, only to find that it has the opposite effect and has to drop out.
• My-HiME and My-Otome: Yukino Kikukawa, whose shyness provides a perfect balance for her very outspoken best friend Haruka. Her My-Otome Expy, Irina, also wears cute-girl frames, but they're smaller and rounder.
• Nagasarete Airantou: Subverted where Chikage initially seems to have the proper personality but ends up having Scary Shiny Glasses and is as crazy as the other girls on the island. However, played straight with her mother Shizuka, wherein she's pleasant, and clever to fool even the lead male.
• Naruto:
  • The personality is played straight with Shiho but the Nerd Glasses and frizzy hair detract from the personality to a degree.
  • Oddly enough, this trope is probably played the straightest with Chojuro, who is male.
  • Kind of subverted with Sarada, Sakura and Sasuke's daughter, who gives the impression to be one but comes off more confident and haughty than sweet and mellow.
• Negima! Magister Negi Magi: Haruna Saotome, Satomi Hakase, Chisame Hasegawa when she's not being net idol Chiu. Kazumi Asakura and Evangeline A.K. McDowell sometimes wears glasses. The same goes for Nodoka's cosplay form in the Gag Series Negima!? and the mostly manga-only character Tsukuyomi. The character notes in Negima claim that Nodoka was designed as an evolution of the Meganekko trope, the "megamikko". Instead of "girl with glasses", it is "girl with long bangs falling into her face and obscuring her eyes in an overall cute way".
• Ninja Nonsense gives this concept a Shout-Out in episode 10, where Shinobu is taken by the "Curse of the Girl With Glasses".
• Nyaruko: Crawling with Love!: Nyarko tries to invoke this in episode 9, but it has no effect on her love interest Mahiro. She insists it's because he doesn't understand the power of the glasses, and makes him try on a pair...which makes Nyarko herself melt into a puddle of Squee!. Then Cuuko tries the same trick on Nyarko, who coldly responds "Quit playing with store merchandise", causing Cuuko to sob about the Double Standard.
• One Piece: Played around with. Tashigi has displayed most, if not all, of the typical traits associated with this trope (including being comically Blind Without 'Em), and yet she's also a gutsy swordsman marine. (Smoker's words, not mine.)
• Ouran High School Host Club has a rare Bifauxnen example in Haruhi Fujioka, who wore glasses during the first half of chapter 1 and returns to the glasses in recent chapters.
• Pani Poni Dash!: Two of the main six girls, Rei and Miyako. Ichijou has a theory that their glasses are the reason they do well on tests. (Suzune tries this out as a joke in the manga, but Ichijou is dead serious.) Behoimi later becomes a meganekko when she quits being a Magical Girl.
• Petite Princess Yucie: Cocoloo is the resident meganekko although in one episode all the girls wear glasses as part of their librarian outfits.
• Please Teacher!: Mizuho Kazami, is an adorably attractive teacher who is in fact an alien. A lot of her charm comes from how nice and sweet she is, with and without glasses.
• Prétear: Sasame might count as a male example, since he's known as the "sensitive" knight, but he can be more flirtatious and outgoing than the typical stereotype.
• Pretty Cure:
  • Yuriko and Kayo Andou, one of the class reps in Splash Star.
  • Yes! Precure 5: Mika has the brains, but most Meganekkos tend to be somewhat... calmer than she is.
  • Both Tsubomi and Yuri in HeartCatch Pretty Cure!, but Tsubomi only wears hers occasionally.
  • Rikka of DokiDoki! Pretty Cure, though, like Tsubomi, she wears her occasionally. Unlike Tsubomi, who's given contacts, it appears Rikka's just a little near-sighted, as she'll wear them if she needs to see something too far away.
  • Minori Ichinose of Tropical-Rouge! Pretty Cure is a stoic bookworm who's always seen wearing her occasionally opaque glasses. She takes them off during the Transformation Sequence.
• The Prince of Tennis: There are at least five males playing up the Meganekko type. Three of them are Oshitari, Inui and Tezuka; their seiyuus even have a musical trio named "Meganes".
• Prison School: Meiko Shiraki is perhaps the hottest and physically voluptuous example around. Yet despite how she dresses, she was bullied for her large chest when she was younger. This as you could imagine, made her into a strict, emasculating Dominatrix, in more ways than you'd think.
• Kiminobu Kogure from Slam Dunk, the male Team Mom from Shohoku.

• Puella Magi Madoka Magica: Shockingly, Homura was one. The Glasses Came Off when she decided to get serious.
• Queen's Blade has Cattleya, who plays the trope straight with her sweet, motherly personality, but also subverts stereotype by being the biggest fighter (in more ways than one) and the most physically powerful.
• Read or Die:
  • Yomiko Readman is considered the Queen of all Meganekkos, thanks to her adorable looks and deep passion for reading books. During R.O.D the TV it's mentioned that she's over thirty. Oddly, her looks haven't changed at all since her first manga appearance, when she stated (honestly) that she was 23.
  • Nenene Sumiregawa in the same series is also quite the Meganekko herself, though her personality doesn't fit the usual stereotype.
• Real Account: Got Chiho, seemingly your typical Shrinking Violet in her early 20s. Forced to take nudes online for some time. But actually, she sent those pictures willingly and is a huge pervert.
• Real Drive has Secretary-General Erika Takanami and the android modeled after her, Holon.
• Rebuild of Evangelion: Mari Illustrious Makinami appeared to be this when the first pictures of her were released, to the point where her Fan Nickname was Glasses Girl. It turns out that she's a Blood Knight who appears to be as mentally disturbed as the rest of the cast. She's also oddly fixated on her sense of smell to the point of spontaneously walking up to Shinji to sniff at him, and she actually likes fighting bizarre Eldritch Abominations, complete with the occasional Glowing Eyes of Doom, a huge grin on her face, and a secret password to give her mecha a fitting new look. Note that Word of God claims Mari's character wasn't finalized during her brief appearance in Evangelion 1.0's trailer. There was apparently a suggested scene where Mari and Shinji would have had tea on the roof (Mari being British), which would have placed her more under this trope.
• Revolutionary Girl Utena: Anthy's gentle and intelligent nature seems to fit the role, though her apparent ditzyness is explained in a dark and extreme subversion later on. Also lampshaded in that the finale reveals that Anthy doesn't even NEED to wear glasses, and was seemingly wearing them at Akio's order, most likely to make her look more submissive and timid. When she finally breaks ties with him, she illustrates this by taking off her glasses and leaving them on his desk, and heading out into the world without them. This is hinted at in one of the next episode previews much earlier in the series where Anthy casually remarks that she can see better WITHOUT her glasses.
• Rizelmine: Papa C's daughter, Kyouko Yachigusa, has a thing for the main character, Rizel Iwaki, and is usually wearing glasses. When in glasses, she's shy and unsure. Take off her glasses and she becomes a horny little predator.
• Rune Soldier Louie: Ila's glasses are actually a pair of pince-nez with regular sized lenses. She's a member of the Magician's Guild though, by her own admission, she's only a novice. But makes up for it with extensive knowledge of magical tomes and artifacts, which she uses to help Louie and his friends.

• Saitama Chainsaw Shoujo: Subverted by Fumio, the protagonist, who is not particularly smart or clever. She certainly doesn't qualify as pleasant, especially when you get on her bad side.
• Sachiare!: Tomoharu's bride Sachiko is ungodly cute already, with her glasses on it gets taken to lethal levels.
• Saki: All four teams from the Nagano prefectural tournament have one. Kiyosumi has Mako, Ryuumonbuchi has Tomoki, Kazekoshi has Miharu, and Tsuruga has Kaori. They all somehow ended up facing one another in the second round. The list goes on in the Nationals, to the point at which Usuzan and Miyamori seem the only exceptions. Shiraitodai has Takami, Rinkai has Satoha, Eisui has Tomoe, Himematsu has Kinue, Senriyama has Hiroko and their coach Masae (Kinue's cousin and mother, respectively), Shindouji has Yoshiko, Kentani has Kozue, and Koshigaya has Sophia. In a less obvious case, Yuu of the Achiga team wears glasses whenever she has to look closely at something.
• Sayonara, Zetsubou-Sensei: Harumi Fujiyoshi is a meganekko, and sees her teacher's wearing of glasses as one of his most attractive traits. In fact, when one day he loses his glasses and comes to class wearing contacts, Harumi promptly slaps them out of his head, forcing him to procure a new pair of spectacles.
• Shonan Jun'ai Gumi!: Ayumi Murakoshi is a cute, glasses-wearing Hot Teacher who Ryuji falls for.
• Shoujo Sect: Honda Shinobu has bad eyesight. Within the story itself she wears contacts, but a short series of throwaway gags features her wearing her specs as she, Kirin, and Maya discuss how a girl in glasses should go about kissing another girl in glasses. Maya worries that if one of the girls removes her glasses it will eliminate her Moe factor, but Kirin assures her that a true Meganekko is always a Meganekko in essence, even if she isn't wearing glasses.
• Silver Spoon: Toku is actually more attractive with her glasses on, because without them she she has to squint all the time, which makes her look intimidating.
• Soul Eater: Azusa Yumi, one of Lord Death's most trusted companions.
• Soul Eater Not!: Mai Thi Hoang aka Eternal Feather, is one of the DWMA's most intelligent and kindest bespectacled young ladies of the academy.
• The Story Between a Dumb Prefect and a High School Girl with an Inappropriate Skirt Length: Student Council President Yamato Nadeshiko wears prominent glasses (when she's not in her sexy outfit), though even her normal appearance leans more towards Sexy Spectacles than Moe.
• Strawberry 100%: Toujou Aya is no less of a cutie with her glasses in place.
• Strawberry Marshmallow: Matsuri is kind and studious, if easily fooled. She's a cute kid with or without glasses, but as she's Blind Without 'Em, and kind of clumsy at the best of times...
• Sword Art Online: Shino Asada wears glasses, but not to help her vision. In fact, her eyesight is nearly twice as good as the average person. She wears them because they're made of ballistic-resistant NXT polymer and they give her some sense of protection from her phobia of guns, as part of her own self-therapy to get over it.
• Tanaka-kun is Always Listless has a relatively strange case. Shiraishi at first invokes The Glasses Gotta Go, but later ditches contacts in favor of these because they strain her eyes. This does not affect her popularity as the School Idol.

• Tiger & Bunny's Tomoe Amamiya (aka, the woman who's implied to have become Kotetsu's wife) was one of these, at least in high school. Kotetsu used to refer to her as Ms. Glasses before they switched to First-Name Basis.
• Thriller Restaurant has Anko, but she, while usually is shy and soft-spoken, can also lash out when too angry.
• In Tokyo Ghoul:
  • The oft-discussed horror novelist Sen Takatsuki turns out to be one. During public appearances, she noticeably doesn't wear them but on her personal time, she wears large-rimmed glasses that suit her cheerful and quirky personality. Kaneki explains that she is known as a great beauty, with many fans more interested in her looks than her novels.
  • In the sequel, Haise Sasaki fits the trope's cheerful and kind bookworm elements to a "t", and wears enormous reading glasses. It creates a strong contrast with his mentor Arima, who wears Stoic Spectacles.
• Tokyo Mew Mew: The shy, tormented Midorikawa Retasu who loses her glasses after her Transformation Sequence into Mew Lettuce. Might have something to do with her water-based powers, but might also be that she's strongest in a fit of blind rage.
• Uzaki-chan Wants to Hang Out!: This seems to be the mangaka's own Author Appeal. The characters often visit stores where the attendants are bespectacled ladies who are also rather bossomy. Ami is the most prominent one, and Shinichi's mom Haruko also looks rather pretty for a woman pushing her 50s.
• Variable Geo's Kaori Yanase is a 19 year old computer technician, though she's more likely to be mistaken for a referee, given her choice of attire. But don't let her glasses, or her meek nature and appearance fool you, or she'll kick your ass.
• ''Wandering Son: Makoto wears glasses, though sometimes she will remove them when she's going out casually. She is probably one of the most mature kids in the series.
• Wife and Wife: Sumi, who is shown to be the more book smart and responsible one between her and her partner, Kina.

• Your Lie in April: Kaori wore glasses before she realized she didn't have much time to live anymore.
• Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D's: Carly Nagisa has this. She also has a dose of Nerd Glasses as well. Of course she is really Beautiful All Along.
• Yu-Gi-Oh! ZEXAL Cathy is a shy Shrinking Violet most of the time who fits this Trope; but she's far more liberated when dueling, not only removing the glasses but wearing Elegant Gothic Lolita and letting a whole different personality emerge.
• Zombie Loan has Michiru, though in more later chapters, she begins to stop wearing them as often.

    Comic Books

• Alpha Flight: A long-defining trait of Heather Hudson. Unfortunately, she got laser eye surgery when she became Vindicator and no longer wore them.
• Batgirl has used glasses as her secret identity. Barbara Gordon is the quintessential Hot Librarian.
• The Dresden Files: In the first comic, Welcome to the Jungle, Harry ends up working with and protecting Willamena "Will" Rodgers, an assistant zoo ape handler who is equal parts Meganekko and Moe.
• Fables: Goldilocks. Subverted: she's batshit insane - violent, sexual, and a political extremist.
• G.I. Joe: The Baroness, although she is decidedly not sweet, shy, and nice, defies the whole The Glasses Gotta Go line of thinking in every series she has been featured in.
• Galacta, the daughter of Galactus, wears a cute pair of glasses as part of her "Galli" identity.
• Mockingbird used to have contacts but now wears spy glasses that also doubles as corrective lenses for her farsightedness.

• Thessaly the murderous witch has worn glasses ever since her first appearance in The Sandman. Presumably, she wears them to convince others that she's harmless.
• Ultimate Spider-Man: Mary Jane Watson eventually starts wearing glasses. In Spider-Men the Peter Parker of the 616 Universe, who started off wearing glasses himself states that his world's MJ wears contacts, but this seems highly unlikely given that she's never actually been seen anywhere near glasses.
• W.I.T.C.H.: Taranee, both in the comic books and the animated series. She even wears glasses after transforming!
• Wonder Woman:
  • The "World's Most Beautiful Woman" has worn glasses in her secret identity as Diana Prince.
  • Wonder Woman (1942): The Heyday triplets are attractive identical sisters who are members of the Holliday Girls and wear large round wire-framed reading glasses.
• X-Men:
  • Kitty Pryde/Shadowcat. Her phasing prevents her from using contacts... awww, too bad!
  • Before she was outed as a mutant, when she was still Deputy Director of DARPA, Raven "Mystique" Darkholme was never seen without her rather severe hornrims; since, like her clothes, they were literally part of her.

• Sister Marisol, from Sister Floriana. Downplayed, in that she's taken a vow of chastity as a nun.
• Male example in Hetalia: Axis Powers fanfic Gankona, Unnachgiebig, Unità . Italy definitely thinks Japan looks really cute while Cosplaying as Teru Mikami from Death Note, thin hexagonal glasses and all.
• Guardians of Pokémon: According to the author, Mitsumi is based on this archetype.
• Skin: For some reason, during the time before 'going blind' became too serious, Shizuka Kawai was one for a short period of time. After her blindness took a nasty turn and surgery was required, this quickly stopped.
• Pacific: World War II U.S. Navy Shipgirls'has Hornet, San Francisco, and Mahan. Pennsylvania meanwhile zig-zags between this and Lovable Alpha Bitch.

• In the Discworld of A.A. Pessimal, several Lady Assassins are bespectacled. They can present a sort of scholarly respectability which in the case of Art teacher Miss Gillian Lansbury might be mistaken, by over-confident students, for ineffectuality and unworldliness. The same might be thought - wrongly - of Botany mistress Doctor Davinia Bellamy. But nobody thinks Miss Alice Band (History, Archaeology, Climbing, Traps and Concealment) is a pushover.

    Film: Animated

• Buster & Chauncey's Silent Night: Mayor Huffenmeier wears these ◊.
• Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs: Sam Sparks, about midway through, when she decides to embrace the nerdier side she kept hidden for so long with Flint's help.
• Despicable Me: Margo. Or rather, she shows promise for becoming this when she grows up. Although, she was seen without her glasses constantly in the first movie.
• Encanto: Mirabel Madrigal will be Disney's first female protagonist with glasses.
• Subverted with Mertle Edmonds from Lilo & Stitch; she wears glasses and looks as though she'd have a shy, nerdy personality, but she's really the Alpha Bitch. Played much straighter with her mom in the TV series, though.
• My Little Pony: Equestria Girls – Rainbow Rocks: Twilight's human double in The Stinger, and a major character in the sequel.

    Film: Live-action

• The Boy Who Cried Werewolf: Jordan, Jordan, Jordan. Pre-werewolf, anyway, as she sports large Nerd Glasses and is quite cute. She's a smart, very independent girl. After she becomes a werewolf, her eyesight becomes 20-20 and she no longer needs them. Unlike in many examples, she stays very good-looking without them too.
• For those who think the Queen is adorable (yes, some people have actually said she is cute even in her old age), in Children's Party at the Palace, Her Majesty wears glasses when she reads speeches. Even the whole plot of the theatrical production is about several storybook characters going on a quest to find her lost handbag, which contains her glasses.
• The Day After: Marilyn Oakes, played by Kyle Aletter, is the doctor's daughter who foolishly exposes her glasses to temperatures that are higher than recommended.
• Day for Night: Francois Truffaut's 1973 movie. Joelle, the script girl, played by Nathalie Baye. Catch Me If You Can director Steven Spielberg said when they needed to find an actress to play Leonardo DiCaprio's French mother he remembered liking the script girl from Truffaut's movie and cast Baye.
• Don't Turn the Other Cheek! has Mary O'Donnell, a Fiery Redhead Action Girl virgin Irish Catholic reporter, who's viewed as desirable by both Max Lozoya and by General Huerta.
• The Faculty: Famke Janssen's Ms. Burke up and down, from the glasses to the crippling shyness. When circumstances lead to the glasses coming off, this all changes.

• Olivia ◊ from Final Destination 5, which subverts Unnecessary Makeover... by having her die during laser eye surgery.
• Ghostbusters: Janine Melnitz is the guys' wisecracking secretary, who's characterized by her Joisy accent, nasally voice, and red-rimmed glasses.
• The Hangover: Melissa. One can see why Stu wants to stay with her initially, regardless of how mean she is to him.
• The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy: Zooey Deschanel in her first main story scene, where she also bares her legs. Also the argyle socks!

• It's a Wonderful Life: Mary Hatch Bailey in the Pottersville version of the world without George. The intent was to show how worse off she was, but still, it's Donna Reed in glasses.
• James Bond: Miss Moneypenny, the Caroline Bliss version, in the Timothy Dalton movies.
• Jurassic Park: Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern), already hot, gets just a little bit hotter in the movie's scene in the park's tourist museum and dinosaur egg laboratory when she puts on a pair of glasses.
• Gwen ◊, in Mr. & Mrs. Smith (2005).
• Night at the Museum 2: Battle Of The Smithsonian: Amy Adams as the woman Ben Stiller's character meets at the end of who resembles the other person Adams played, a wax figure of Amelia Earhart come to life.
• Once Upon a Time in Hollywood: Sharon Tate (played by Margot Robbie) reaches for a pair of thick, oversized reading glasses while watch herself in the film The Wrecking Crew
• The Rage: Carrie 2: Monica. She gets the "good-looking in glasses" part down pat, but not the "sweet" or "pleasant" parts. The glasses also wind up getting her brutally killed.
• Rocky: Adrian is the quintessential Meganekko. In subsequent movies, however, she does get the obligatory make-over.
• Sky High (2005): Jetstream/Josie Stronghold wears glasses in her secret identity, and looks damn good in them.
• Some Like It Hot: Marilyn Monroe's character apparently believes that the meganekko stereotype applies to men as well, as she expresses a belief that men with glasses are gentle and vulnerable.
• The Spirit: Silken Floss is the most beautiful woman in the world. And she will remain so, as long as she never takes those fucking things off.
• Tank Girl: Naomi Watts as "Jet Girl". When first met she's a nice, meek girl who's easily pushed around and is quite smart (an expert mechanic and pilot).
• Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen: One can be seen during the scene where Sam is in his astronomy class sitting in the front row, whom the professor (Rainn Wilson) drops his apple to and tells her to finish it for him.
• One of the most iconic male examples of the trope would have to be silent-film comedian Harold Lloyd's "Glasses Character", which was to Lloyd what the Little Tramp was to Charlie Chaplin. Another would be Cary Grant's David in Bringing Up Baby. Christopher Reeve said he based his portrayal of Clark Kent on David.

• Friday The 13th Hate-Kill-Repeat: An FBI agent mentions his new partner suddenly goes from hot to absolutely adorable when she briefly puts on a pair of reading glasses.
• Bernice in This Present Darkness. In her introductory scene, she's mentioned as being very attractive and wearing glasses in the same sentence.

• In the Inspector Morse book "The Secret of Annexe 3", Sarah Jonstone, the receptionist of the Haworth Hotel, has "almost comically large" spectacles, and ticks the boxes for being pleasant, smart and clever. By the end of the book, she and Morse are dating.
• Carney from the Betsy-Tacy series is an Edwardian example of this.
• Nerdycorn: Fern wears a large pair of glasses with big thick frames.

    Live-Action TV

• Angel: Gibbering Genius Hot Librarian Winifred 'Fred' Burkle wears Nerd Glasses on occasion to highlight her braininess. Lampshaded when Lilah Morgan gets jealous over Wesley pining over Fred and dresses up like her to taunt him. As they're stripping off to have sex, Wes tells Lilah to keep the glasses on. (The last season has Fred go without them most of the time.)
• Arrow: Felicity Smoak. In one episode she went to a party without her glasses and just looked gorgeous instead of "Smoaking" Hot!. Sorry.
• The Big Bang Theory:
  • Bernadette is a petite PhD student of microbiology who often wears glasses. Definitely a Hot Scientist variety.
  • Leslie Winkle works as a researcher physicist at Cal Tech University. She's the Love Interest of Leonard and later Howard.
  • Amy Farrah Fowler, Sheldon's brilliant primatologist Love Interest, has a cute little pair of glasses.
  • Penny plays with this trope in "The Egg Salad Equivalency" when she feels threatened by Alex, Sheldon's assistant, after she makes a pass at Leonard. Much to Leonard's delight.
• Bad Education: Jing Hua the classes often snarky Chinese student.
• Burn Notice: The episode "Partners in Crime" had Fiona donning a pair in order to pose as a CIA Agent, placing her nicely into this trope.
• Chuck: Sarah frequently wears glasses for her various aliases and covers, while Chuck himself could certainly be considered a male version when he does the same. And then there's Jill.
• Coronation Street: Deirdre was known as "Miss Sexy Spex" when younger (back in The '70s). Her actress doesn't need glasses.
• Crazy Ex-Girlfriend: Maya wears a pair of glasses with huge black frames, but they just make her look even prettier.
• Criminal Minds: The adorable Penelope Garcia. She actually ditches her glasses for an episode to try and look more professional, but goes back to them when she's told to be herself.
• Daddy's Daughters: Galina Vasnetsova ◊.
• Degrassi: The Next Generation: For the students, there's Liberty, and then later, Clare, before she got her laser eye surgery, another bane of glasses fetishists, and Maya after her. For the teachers there's Mrs. Oh.
• Doctor Who: The Tenth Doctor himself frequently dons his so-called "Brainy Specs". As he exposits when he encounters his fifth incarnation, he doesn't really need them, he just thinks they make him look clever. A side effect of this is that they make him adorable, but that might just have something to do with the fact that he's played by David Tennant.
• Dollhouse: Bennett which is actively lampshaded by Topher, who out and out says she's almost perfect. Except for the whole "violently seeking revenge on Caroline's body" thing...

• Eleventh Hour: Agent Young has a pair of glasses that appear whenever she and Hood are looking at computer screens.
• Gilmore Girls': Lane Kim. Lampshaded when she used contact lenses in an episode and both her mother and her boyfriend criticized her decision.
• Hannah Montana:
  • The episode, "You're So Vain, You Probably Think This Zit Is About You'' revealed that Lily wears contacts, and when her dog eats them, she has to wear glasses. Even though she hates them, they put her squarely into this trope.
  • Miley wore a pair while she was Lily's "lawyer" in the episode "You Are So Sue-able To Me".
• Heroes: Sue Landers, the Living Lie Detector... er... never mind. Darn it, Sylar, this is why we can't have nice people!

• How I Met Your Mother:
  • Robin, played by the already smoking hot Cobie Smulders, actually managed to get more gorgeous in the show's sixth season by donning a pair of specs.
  • Abby, who appeared in two episodes, played the already hot Britney Spears, made hotter by the glasses.
• iCarly: Ms. Fielder, Carly's art teacher in the episode "iMust Have Locker 239".
• Made: One episode had a slacker jock failing his classes wants to graduate. To help him study they get him a tutor, a hot female college student with glasses.
• Magnum, P.I.: Adelaide, in the first season episode of the same name.
• Maid in Akihabara : Lampshaded. Maid Cafe waitress (see Fan Service With A Smile) Saki falls over and her contact lenses come out, so she reluctantly puts on her glasses. The otaku customers are all immediately smitten with her, thanks to her new-found Moe-ness. (This is also a direct inversion of the Beautiful All Along trope of the girl taking off her glasses and magically becoming pretty.)
• Malcolm in the Middle: A pre-iCarly Jennette McCurdy played a tween version of this trope in the episode The Buseys Take a Hostage.
• The Middleman:
  • Referenced in the show's podcast, when the creator is asked why Wendy Watson doesn't wear her glasses more. The response given is that she generally wears her glasses in civilian mode, and removes them in crime-fighter mode as a Clark Kent/Superman reference.
  • The episode "Singled Out" featured a Navy lieutenant as a kidnap victim who fit the trope, and in the same episode, Ziva falls into the trope when she goes undercover as a geek resembling the Navy lieutenant.

• In The Office (US), this trope was brought up in the episode "Did I Stutter?" While already the show's eye candy, Pam gets even hotter when it's revealed she wears contacts and has to wear her glasses when she forgets her solution. While Michael doesn't like them, she finds herself the object of Kevin's advances after he reveals he has a glasses fetish.

    • Billy and Kimberly switched in the "Freaky Friday" Flip episode. That episode served as fetish fuel for many a preteen.
  • Power Rangers Lightspeed Rescue: Ms. Fairweather. Always wearing glasses, very hot AND presented as very hot - rare for Western television. The Green Ranger was particulary smitten with her, and they eventually hooked up and got married. (one of the very few actual romances in any series of Power Rangers).
  • Power Rangers Lost Galaxy: Kendrix is considered a Meganekko by some.
• Royal Pains: Divya Katdare (Reshma Shetty). Definitely hotter glasses-on than glasses-off.
• When Lady Gaga hosted Saturday Night Live in 2013 she used this trope to play an Apple Store Genius Bar employee in one sketch.
• Shtisel: Shira Levi, the girl Yosa'le falls for in Season 3, has very prominent glasses.
• Stargate SG-1: The already ridiculously hot Colonel Samantha Carter of appeared in the alternate time-line episode "Moebius" where instead of being a Colonel Badass and an Action Girl, she was a Hot Librarian type, complete with the coke-bottle obviously fake-lensed glasses.
• Stranger Things has three: Marissa the Librarian who appears in the first two seasons and sleeps with the very single police chief Hopper, young teenage and redhaired Barb Holland who looks like Shannon Purser, and Suzie, Dustin's long-distance girlfriend who he says is appealing as Phoebe Cates.
• Like her cousin, Supergirl wears glasses in her Secret Identity.
• 30 Rock: Liz Lemon, played by Real Life meganekko, Tina Fey.
• Torchwood: Toshiko Sato, the resident tech geek, frequently dons geeky reading glasses, just to add to that doe-eyed, earnest Asian geek/unnoticed-but-insanely-good-looking thing she's got going on. Strangely enough, her original appearance in the Doctor Who episode "Aliens of London" had her wearing mostly the same specs, but with a noticeable nearsightedness prescription instead of the reading glasses they became in Torchwood...
• Maddy Ferguson, in the first season of Twin Peaks. Not so much the second season.
• Ultra Series
  • Konomi Amagai from Ultraman Mebius, who is quite timid and loves cute things. Her Cuteness Proximity reaction to Rimu Eleking is as hilarious as it is adorable.
  • Rui Takada from Ultraman X, a nerdy Genki Girl who uses the suffix "-chan" when referring to kaiju , particularly her favourite, Eleking, a 55 meter tall mix of a Psycho Electric Eel and a giant salamander.
• Verano Azul has a nerdy but nonetheless cute teenage girl named Desi, who wears Girlish Pigtails and braids.
• Victorious:
  • Tori in the Helen Back Again Episode. She just happens to have glasses on when she receives bad news, however she is working out. Who needs glasses to workout. It just screams feel sorry for me.
  • In a later episode Cat knows Tori has a boy in her house because she's usually has her glasses on when she's alone at home.
• The West Wing: CJ would sometimes need glasses and would look much better when she did.
• Wonder Woman (the 70's TV series): Like her comic book counterpart, the classic Diana Prince...as a Secret Identity it wasn't too concealing, but the glasses did make her look like a different person, leaving viewers to obsess over who was sexier: Lynda Carter in glasses, or Wonder Woman.
• The X-Files: Scully, whose glasses are only worn when she composes her reports to her boss on a computer, are put in for the sole purpose of this effect. Especially because they appear to have no optical qualities at all, and are just clear glass.
• Yayoi Ulshade from Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger, the first female Super Sentai hero to wear glasses and a scientist-type; Ian was instantly smitten by her when they first met. However, her glasses are non-prescription; they serve to create hologram projections.

    Music

• Guitarist/vocalist Sheena Ozzella of the indie rock band Lemuria definitely qualifies when she's wearing glasses. Just look at her!
• Taylor Swift. In the video for the song "You Belong With Me", she plays dual roles as a cheerleader and as a nerdy neighbor girl. For the nerdy neighbor girl part she dons a pair of glasses, which not only fail to make her look unattractive but actually make her even more beautiful.
• ZZ Top. The video for "Legs". The featured girl in the video, in addition to having the great set of legs the title describes, she also wears a sexy set of glasses for the first 45 seconds of the video.

• Not a musician herself, but '90s MTV Alternative Nation VJ Kennedy (aka Lisa Kennedy Montgomery) definitely fit the bill.
• Jennifer Warnes is quite well known for her bespectacled look. When she launched her career in the late 1960s (as Jennifer Warren, and later just Jennifer before she settled on Warnes in the '70s), she was one of a select few female musical performers who kept her glasses on while performing, rendering them a trademark.
• Nancy Honeytree, one of the first stars of Contemporary Christian Music, very much projected and embraced a glasses-wearing Ingenue persona.

Medium notwithstanding, she fits the mold of a meganekko, she acts like a meganekko, and just to dispel any remaining doubt, the official artwork (only seen in the older, less stylized pictures for good measure) depicts her as a reserved, bespectacled meganekko. Lucy Cunningham-Schultz, the resident Intrepid Reporter for the Odyssey Owl, is another example.

• Some actresses in Hairspray portray Penny Pingleton with glasses, despite Kerry Butler, the original, having never worn glasses in the original cast.
• The Vienna State Ballet's performance of "Student Polka" during the 2015 New Year's celebration on PBS includes one as a character.

    Video Games

• 100% Orange Juice! has eyeglasses cosmetic for each character, allowing every character to become this (or Megane).
• Advanced V.G.: Kaori's appearance is the same as her OVA depiction, glasses and all. When she isn't practicing Taekwondo, she's hard at work at her job as a computer analyst.
• Isabelle, the Ditzy Secretary from Animal Crossing, is shown to wear glasses when off duty in Happy Home Designer. This is carried over to the Welcome amiibo update for New Leaf, and she'll even sometimes discuss this if you talk to her in her RV.

  Isabelle: Why am I wearing glasses? Because I'm nearsighted, of course! Oh! I just realized that I usually wear contacts at work. Heehee!

• While Bayonetta herself gears more towards Sexy Spectacles, her Morality Pet of sorts, Cereza, certainly is super cute with those glasses.

• Chrono Trigger: Lucca is a 16 year old Gadgeteer Genius and childhood friend of Chrono. She always has thick framed glasses on.
• Dead or Alive: Leifang has the option to wear glasses in Dead Or Alive 4. In Dead or Alive 5, every girl can wear glasses with almost all of their outfits.
• DJMAX Trilogy: You can earn the title "DJ Megane Maniac" by playing songs whose background animations star glasses-wearing characters a combined total of 100 times.
• In Ensemble Stars!, during the previous year before the main story Chiaki was one, wearing glasses to complement his very shy and insecure personality. Significantly, at some point between then and becoming the loud-mouthed Pollyanna he is in the present day, the glasses disappeared.
• Feathery Ears: It may be hard to see them, but Misa Nikko has a little pair... of glasses.
• Final Fantasy VIII: Quistis Trepe wears glasses, but only in cutscenes where she's just being a teacher. When she goes into the field, i.e. is fighting, she takes them off (which is probably necessary at least in part because her first Limit Break involves shooting lasers from her eyes).
• Say what you want about it being a blatant Team Fortress 2 ripoff, but Final Combat's Sniper totally fits.
• Harvest Moon: Many of the games in the series have a character like this whom you can score as a potential wife: Maria in the Flower Bud Village saga, Mary in the Mineral Town saga and Flora in Forget-Me-Not Valley.
• Hatsune Miku Project Diva F features "Megane" (listed as "Glasses" in the English version), featuring Megurine Luka and her large collection of eye wear. The video straddles the line between this trope and Sexy Spectacles at points. There's also a selection of eyeglasses to buy for the characters with Diva Points.
• HuniePop: Has two, Aiko and Nikki both very attractive in their own right.
• The Idolm@ster: Ritsuko Akizuki, though she isn't a typical cutesy type - she just projects that persona. In fact, she's snarky and more than a little sneaky, having been known to astroturf an Internet message board to drum up support for herself.
• The Fairy Queen (a.k.a. Queen Ripple) from Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards sports round glasses with thin borders.
• Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty:
  • Emma Emmerich admits that she simply wears glasses for show, and because her step-brother Hal wears glasses. And Hal, thanks to those Moe "Sweet Snake" figurines that have recently popped up, can qualify for being a male example of this trope. In some Easter Eggs, you find out that both Raiden and Snake seem interested in her.

    Snake: Do I need to clear things with Otacon before I ask her out?

  • Otacon (Hal) definitely qualifies. Certain segments of the fanbase had cause to mourn when he took them off for a bit of MGS4 because of character development. He returns to wearing them by the end of the game.
  • Kazuhira Miller is characterized for wearing a classy pair of shades, and much like the Emmerich siblings he's one of the series most intelligent characters.

• Mitsumete Knight has Sarah Pixis and Menesys. The second, a Mad Scientist, is of both the Nerd Glasses and Scary Shiny Glasses variety, and she's revealed as Beautiful All Along when she let the glasses go in her Ending).
• NEO: The World Ends with You has Nagi, who joins the party a few days into the Game.
• Nippon Ichi: "Merchant"-type characters in a few games, namely Phantom Brave and Makai Kingdom.
• Overwatch: Mei is a scientist that comes with glasses and is adorable with her rather big fluffy coat for cold environment.
• The Persona series contains multiple examples of this trope
  • Persona 3 has Chihiro Fushimi, the adorably shy and meek class treasurer, as one of the Main Character's social links, and a datable one at that (woo!). She makes a cameo in Persona 4 - two years older, more confident, and somehow even cuter, leading every one of your characters to feel swoony or envious at her all-encompassing beauty.
  • Persona 4 enforces this trope on the entire party, and so does the Persona 4 spin-off Fighting Game Persona 4: Arena has an option appropriately called "Megane", that allows you to give your selected character glasses.
  • Persona 5 has Joker as a male example.
    • In Royal, Sumire Yoshizawa starts wearing glasses when it's revealed that she isn't Kasumi.
• Pokémon:
  • Pokémon Black and White has Fennel and Shauntal. Bianca, as if she wasn't moe enough already, gets passed the torch for the sequel.
  • Earlier Pokémon games introduced Lorelei, one of the Elite Four from the Kanto Region. Her appearance and personality make her a classic in this category.
• Rule of Rose: Meg, the Wise-Looking Princess, acts as a secretary for the Aristocrat Club and the spokesperson of the Rose Princess, and has apparently invented at least some of the torture devices used by the Club for keeping discipline. Other than that, she is mainly characterized by her obsessive devotion to Diana, who really doesn't appreciate the attention.
• Rune Factory 4 has Arthur, a young man with a pair of half-moon Nerd Glasses who insists that the female protagonist looks far cuter when wearing spectacles.
• Saints Row: The Third: Kinzie Kensington ◊.
  • While she does retain the look for most of the sequel, Saints Row IV, if you unlock her Super Homie form, her glasses go absent.
• Penelope Mouse in the Sly Cooper games wears glasses, is a Wrench Wench, and is all around a sweet person. But it's all a ruse; Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time reveals that she's a sociopath who only loves money.
• Soul At Stake: Daisy "The Student" has a big pair... of glasses.
• StarCraft II: Ariel Hanson, who has been described by Blizzard as "a doctor lady with glasses who looks really cute".
• Star Ocean:
  • Cute Clumsy Girl Sarah Jerand seems to be an archetype laundry list with some wings attached. Most players, however, hate her because her personality traits are exaggerated to the point of ridiculousness in most of her featured cutsenes.
  • Welch is aware of this trope and taking complete advantage of it.
• Street Fighter IV: Guile and C.Viper both can be caught wearing fashionable pair, though Viper doesn't take them off until she wins her fight.
• Super Robot Wars: Tsugumi Takakura. Latooni Subota was once like this, but has dropped it, but only in the Game Boy Advance canon. Super Robot Wars: Original Generation and Super Robot Wars Original Generation: Divine Wars retcons it by not having her wear glasses as Princess Shine's bodyguard. Rest of the time, she wears them. The recent Super Robot Wars K also features a Meganekko named Angelica Shartill.
• Target of Desire: Episode 1. Maria's glasses are so thick, when she looks at a map, she can see people waving at her.
• Team Fortress 2:
  • Miss Pauling, the Administrator's assistant, introduced in one of the Administrator comics. She doesn't hesitate to manipulate Soldier and Demoman into killing each other, mind, but she has the look. It helps that she's still less cold than her boss. This says a lot about her boss. As the comics and videos progressed, she becomes one of the most important female characters, remaining cute despite her proficiency with deception and murder.
  • In the video "Expiration Date", Scout explicitly mentions Pauling's "slightly crooked" glasses as a fetish of his.
• Touhou Project: Surprisingly for an Improbably Female Cast, there are only 5 characters that fits this trope: Rikako Asakura, Luna Child (when she's reading), Mamizou Futatsuiwa, Kosuzu Motoori (again, for reading), and Sumireko Usami.
• While not revealed until the ending, real Shiki ◊ in The World Ends with You is a rather mousy girl who wears pair of glasses.

    Visual Novels

• The Ace Attorney series has Maggey Byrde; Adrian Andrews, an actor's manager; Penny, a film set designer; and to a goggle extent, Ema Skye.
• The Code:Realize version of Victor Frankenstein is a male example, as his gentle and kind nature is one of his defining traits. He's also soft-spoken, easily flustered, and the prime source of moe among the love interests. He and his cute round-framed glasses also serves as a contrast to the other glasses-wearing love interest, the tsundere Stoic Spectacles Abraham Van Helsing, who wears glasses with square frames.
• Fate/stay night:
  • Rin wears glasses when she's in teacher mode — with sexy results. In the sequel Fate/hollow ataraxia, Rider has a more functional pair that she wears when she's in civvies.
  • There's a FSN doujin ("Beat Your Fate") where we see Sakura give Rider the glasses, secretly thinking this will make sure Shirou doesn't fall for her — at which point he turns out to be a "glasses man". The rest of the harem immediately start trying pairs on. Sakura has no choice but to do the same... and Shirou tells her she looks more plain with glasses.
• Katawa Shoujo: Shizune, the Class Representative of the main character's class. She is clever and presumably smart, but sweet? ...Not so much.
• Becca in Melody is smart and well-mannered, but also painfully shy.
• Sono Hanabira Ni Kuchizuke Wo: Played with by Kaede, who is shy and kind and is the Class Representative but is really only an average student. Lampshaded by Sara, who asks if Kaede is an honour student, and admits that she only thought she was because her glasses and plait gave off that impression. However, while Sara doesn't have any particular feelings about Kaede's glasses, she dislikes the personality they give her, preferring a more masculine, Bifauxnen type of personality, which Kaede only reaches when she removes her glasses and undoes her hair.
• Mystic Messenger gives us Jaehee. She's not shy, but she is a kind and responsible Office Lady. Yoosung in his good ending is a male example (Seven is a cute boy in glasses, but doesn't count because he doesn't fit the personality type.)
• Time Hollow: Emily. To be mean, you can take her glasses. She gets in a horrible accident off-screen.
• The Tokimeki Memorial series. Nearly every game has one of them:
  • 1 has Mio Kisaragi (Shrinking Violet and Cute Bookworm who will let the glasses go depending on a choice during the game);
  • 3 has Rika Kawai (Ditzy Mad Scientist);
  • 4 has Tsugumi Godo (Bookworm who, in a subversion, is a Tsundere extraordinaire)
  • Girl's Side 1 has Shiho Arisawa (Kind and studious Huge Schoolgirl), and Sakuya Morimura (a sweet young man who loves flowers) as the male variant.
  • Girl's Side 2 has Chiyomi Onoda.
• Tsukihime: Ciel, though she probably has better eyesight than most.
  • She can see perfectly fine without them. Actually, she asks Shiki at one point if he has a glasses fetish and wants her to continue wearing them while she helps with a terrible supernatural affliction.
• Yumina The Ethereal has Maino Honma, who is head of the Library Committee and a classic Shrinking Violet.
• While her personality type doesn't quite fit, Phi in Zero Time Dilemma is sporting a pair of specs that makes her quite attractive, even in comparison to her previous appearance.

    Webcomics

• Angel Down Bernard was one of these when he was younger, but his older counterpart falls into Stoic Spectacles.
• Angel Moxie: Riley, a shy nerd with glasses half the size of her head.
• The Dreamland Chronicles: Nicole is one of these. Glasses are a little smaller than the usual fare, but she certainly fits the trope.
• Eerie Cuties has Chloe, the Meganekko Moe succubus — who eventually gets her own spin-off, Dangerously Chloe, but loses the glasses in the process (because her supernatural beauty would melt them).
• El Goonish Shive:
  • Chika, the newly introduced colleague and sane partner of Amanda. Or at least looks like one most of the time. Much to his chagrin, Tedd gets this at times when he's wearing his glasses. (Has he been transformed with them on?)
  • Dan commented that he's been doing this more and more lately with random female background characters.
  • Rhoda wore glasses before joining Diane's Girl Posse and reverts to this look as a disguise after becoming famous.
• Parodied (maybe) in Errant Story, where Nookie, one of the "Paedagogusi" (somewhere between weird angels and fairies in role, but looking like the latter), sports the specs, although as a semi-divine being, she shouldn't really need them.
• Erstwhile has the king in "Brother and Sister". Which by making him less threatening did help with the effect of his finding her in the woods and instantly asking her to marry him.
• Fetch Quest: Saga of the Twelve Artifacts has Felicia, who double-subverts the "sweet, modest girl" part of this: She manages to hold up on her own against thieves, but when confronted with Lionel "the Lucky", she almost immediately goes back to being this.
• Frivolesque: EVERY female character in Frivolesque save for action girl Gaia and the voluptuous Liliane (who has sunglasses on instead) is a meganekko in some way.

• Homestuck: Jade Harley is a classic example. In what could probably be attributed to Author Appeal, half the main cast wears glasses, so she's not the only one - other examples present include Feferi Peixes, Terezi Pyrope, and Vriska Serket. Jade's brother John Egbert is a male example, as well as Jane Crocker, John and Jade's genetic mother.
• It's Walky!:
  • Parodied when Billie gets glasses, not only does Danny find her even more attractive than before, but several guys who didn't care about her before (Joe and Howard in particular) begin hounding her until she threatens to get contacts.
  • Howard even has an... unplanned emission, the first (and second) times he sees her this way. I mean an orgasm, of course.
  • The author's bespectacled Real Life wife Maggie, showing up alongside his Author Avatar. It's starting to seem like there's a bit of Author Appeal involved...
  • Also parodied in the same strip, when Genki Girl Robin gives Amber a makeover, then tries to play the Meganekko role herself but fails on an epic level.
  • Amber later exchanged her coke bottle frames, commenting on how outdated they are, and gotten a pair of smaller, much nicer-looking modern glasses that work just as well.
• Karin-dou 4koma has Meguru, a Cute Clumsy Girl who's Blind Without 'Em, and skilled enough with magic to be chosen as apprentice by the world's greatest magician.
• Lily Love has Donut, an adorably shy girl with large glasses.
• Magick Chicks: Sandi Mnemonic is a Technopath, described as (quote): "a living Google" on the comic's cast page, due to her ability to categorize and analyze data. She can even predict future events with 97.09% certainty, provided she has all the available data on a given situation. Which is why Faith has Sandi as her personal secretary on the student council.
• MegaTokyo:
  • Yuki wore these when she became a Magical Girl; being Largo her mentor, however, they're quickly replaced with Cool Shades.
  • Ping also experimented with glasses at one point in a vain attempt at making herself less attractive. Sadly, it backfired, due to this trope.

• RPG World: Detestai of the defunct webcomic is a catgirl who was given magic glasses by her ex-boyfriend, the villain, that turn her from a gentle kitten to "evil to the glasses." Also, she's rather tall. Does that make her a Mega Neko?
• Sarilho: Ângela's introduction has her sporting these huge round glasses that cover most of her face.
• Sleepless Domain: A series of flashbacks reveal that, before she became the famous magical girl Alchemical Air, Sylvia used to be a cute and somewhat bookish girl with a pair of square glasses. It's quite the contrast from the more confident and glamorous persona she adopted as a magical girl.
• In Star Impact, Phoebe dons a pair of rectangular spectacles in Chapter 3, and swaps them for a pair of Round Hippie Shades by Chapter 4.
• Sticky Dilly Buns has Ruby, who is cute in her way and book-smart, and definitely has the big glasses. Unfortunately, she also has an unstable temper and doubts about men.
• The Wotch: As of a long-term Gender Bender with accompanying memory alterations for everyone else, Ivan "Yvonne" Bezdomny has apparently been thrown headfirst into Meganekkodom. Compounded with all of the transformation's other consequences...

  "Homeless Blog": The loneliness is only magnified by the attention I do receive. Somehow I have a "quiet, nerdy thing goin' on" that some guys find attractive. This scares me.

• Yokoka's Quest: Grace spends her waking hours wearing glasses, and fits the meganekko stereotypes insofar as her friends describe her as cute, and her stats page says she's intelligent and a fast learner.

• Gaia Online, with its strong anime influence, has several.

• OLruna, Alruna the Horny Devil dressed up as an Office Lady, is a subversion, as being a succubus she doesn't really have the personality.
• Gaia-Sama, a Bizarro Universe Office Lady version of the site's personification. She's rather aggressive for this trope, though.
• Vanessa, the biggest subversion as nobody ever looks high enough to notice that she even wears glasses.
• Eileen from the recent Love Charm RIG plays the trope more straight, though — shy, intelligent and downright ''adorable'

• The Nostalgia Chick, in her early videos, wore glasses, but quit after losing the frames. Her beleaguered best friend Nella often wears glasses as well.

• RWBY: Glynda Goodwitch qualifies, although she possesses a rather snobbish and cold personality. One cannot deny that she is attractive, and a very classy dame.

• Survival of the Fittest: V3's Louise "Lulu" Altaire, a librarian's aide who also is part of a Writer's Workshop and Art Club. Naturally, she has large, thick framed glasses. By the time Endgame comes around, they're notably scratched up.
• The Whateley Universe: Gateway, a summoner learning her craft at Whateley Academy. Oddly enough, what she summons the most often is a Mega Neko.
• Ellie from One Hundred Yard Stare, with bright red frames to boot!
• Doki, granted on the fact it has been established that she is nearsighted and needs them to see so almost all of her pictures have her wearing them. Also, according to some, it adds to her cuteness. As is her daughter Vielle, Seraphina and Vielle both are just as Moe as Doki is.
• Siobhan Thompson, the first host of BBC America's Anglophenia, now starring in College Humor videos, is a great example.
• The Gumdrops - Lindsay is The Cutie of the group and she's the only character to wear glasses. She's also the Only Sane Man in a house full of wacky people.
• Lindsay Amer of Queer Kid Stuff.

    Western Animation

• Alvin and the Chipmunks: Jeanette of the Chipettes is the shyest and clumsiest of the group, with her thick glasses emphasizing this.
• Bob's Burgers: We have the quirky mom, Linda, the awkward yet innocent elder daughter, Tina and Linda's unorthodox younger sister, Gayle. Each as odd as the other, in their own flavors.

• Daria:
  • The title character, though she may be something of an inversion — it's pretty well established that Daria is naturally attractive and dresses down to avoid attention, so it's not too clear if the glasses work for her or against her. For her - in that they keep male attention off her. This is such a truism to the character that on the show's Wiki, there's an entry that defines her eyewear as ''manstopper glasses''.
  • Brittany also entered the trope in the episode "Through a Lens Darkly" where she gets a set of glasses thinking they'll make her smarter.
• Family Guy: Meg might have qualified back before she became the show's Butt-Monkey.

• Hey Arnold!: Phoebe, the show's official Meganekko, and in one episode Rhonda is forced to get glasses due to her waning vision. At first, she absolutely hates them because it drops her to geek status. However, she later comes to accept them, and gets a new, sleeker pair of glasses at the end of the episode.

• Jacob Two-Two: Rene Ratelle. She's usually nice, but speaks French, so genre conventions demand that she sometimes acts a bit stuck up.
• Jimmy Two-Shoes: Heloise, whenever she wears her Nerd Glasses.

• The Legend of Korra: Zhu Li, the Cloud Cuckoo Landers Minder to Varrick, certainly fits in both appearance and personality, patiently tolerating her employer's eccentricities and executing his various wild schemes. Except she's actually Varrick's Dragon, and described by him as a "cold, heartless war machine."

• My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic:
  • Subverted with Silver Spoon. She wears glasses, but she's the Beta Bitch to Diamond Tiara. According to creator Lauren Faust, Silver Spoon was given glasses as a somewhat counterbalance to the character of Twist, another maganekko.
  • Played straight with Rarity, who wears reading glasses while she's working.
  • And Daring Do when under the guise of A.K. Yearling.
  • A minor character example is Vinyl Scratch (aka DJ Pon-3). She wears a cool pair of purple shades which work wonders for her dub-step themed character.
  • Moondancer, one of Twilight Sparkle's old best friends also qualifies especially after she opens up.

• Ready Jet Go!: Mitchell Peterson is a Rare Male Example. His large Nerd Glasses and adorkable tendencies help him become endearing to the viewer, especially after his character development.
• The Real Ghostbusters and Extreme Ghostbusters has Janine Melnitz. Alternates between thick, round, dark glasses and pointy, bright green glasses and looks cute in both of them.
• Recess: Gretchen Grundler.
• Regular Show: Eileen, an anthropomorphic one.
• Scooby-Doo:
  • Although it had Daphne to (ostensibly) fill its sex appeal quotient, others preferred Velma, who is synonymous with those glasses of hers.
  • Velma in the cartoons, and especially in the live action films. In early Japanese dubs her name was even changed to Megako to invoke this trope.
  • In Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, this trope (as well as Nerds Are Sexy) goes into full effect as far as Velma is concerned.
• The Spectacular Spider-Man: Peter Parker, who started off wearing glasses, and Gwen Stacy (but not as much as Peter. However, She does become just like her comic book incarnation).
• Connie from Steven Universe. Her big, round glasses just make her more adorable. Even when her vision is fixed, she just pops out the lenses to keep the look so her family and optometrist won't know she had her vision cured through an Indirect Kiss with Steven, who has Healing Spit.

• TaleSpin has Myra, the friendly, intelligent Adventurer Archaeologist from the episode "In Search of Ancient Blunders". Another Funny Animal example.
• Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (1987): Irma Langinstein. She wears large nerdy glasses at all times.

• Total Drama:
  • Beth. She wears glasses, and although she might not be the best looking girl she fits into the Ugly Cute category, and she's definitely a sweet heart.
  • Scarlett, though her glasses turn out to be fake.
  • Mary and Ellody (especially Ellody), the Geniuses, and Miles from The Ridonculous Race spinoff.
